Few golf clubs in Spain carry the historical weight of Real Golf Club de San Sebastián, one of the oldest in the country. Founded in the late 19th century, it traces its roots to the British community that wintered along the Basque Coast, and the "Real" — Royal — designation reflects the patronage it earned in an era when golf in Spain was largely an aristocratic pursuit. The club has occupied its present site in Hondarribia for decades, and the course has a classic, unhurried character that feels entirely in keeping with its surroundings.
Hondarribia itself is one of the most beautiful towns in the Basque Country — a medieval walled citadel perched above the Bidasoa estuary, just across the water from France. The course plays through terrain that reflects that coastal Basque landscape: varied, green, and exposed enough to feel the Atlantic influence.
For visiting golfers, this is a genuine piece of European golf history rather than a resort showcase, and it rewards those who come with some curiosity about the club's long role in Basque and Spanish golf.
