Matthews sits just southeast of Charlotte, close enough to the city that it draws a mixed bag of suburban commuters and longtime locals — but far enough that the surrounding Piedmont terrain still has room to breathe. Golf in this part of North Carolina benefits from a long playing season, mild winters, and the kind of gently rolling topography that rewards designers who know how to use elevation changes without resorting to artifice.
Divide is a name that hints at something about the land itself — a ridge, a watershed, a natural boundary running through the property — and that kind of nomenclature usually signals a layout that was built around a genuine feature rather than imposed on flat ground. A par 72 over 18 holes is the standard canvas, but what matters in this part of the Piedmont is how a course uses the movement in the terrain and the mature hardwoods that define so many Charlotte-area layouts.
The Matthews area has grown considerably over the past two decades, and courses here tend to serve an active suburban membership looking for a reliable, well-conditioned round close to home — competitive enough to hold interest, approachable enough to keep regulars coming back.
