Few golf clubs in India carry the historical weight of Poona Golf Club. Its roots trace back to the British colonial era, making it one of the oldest clubs in the country, born from the same sporting culture that established early cricket grounds and racecourses across the subcontinent. Pune — known then as Poona — served as a seasonal retreat for British officers escaping Bombay's coastal heat, and the golf club became a fixture of that cantonment social life. That legacy is still present in the club's atmosphere and architecture.
Pune sits at roughly 560 meters on the Deccan Plateau, which gives the course a drier, more temperate feel than India's coastal layouts. The landscape is characteristic of Maharashtra's interior — open, rolling terrain with scrubby vegetation and a climate that makes year-round golf genuinely comfortable, particularly during the cooler months from October through February.
As one of Pune's anchor clubs, it draws a loyal membership from the city's growing professional and expat communities. The par-71 layout rewards course management over raw power, and the club's age means mature trees and established character that newer Indian courses are still decades from developing.
