Few settings in golf match the sheer drama of Banff. The Rundle and Sulphur courses together form the 18-hole layout at the Banff Springs Golf Course, one of Canada's most celebrated and visually stunning rounds. Designed by Stanley Thompson in 1929 — with contributions by Donald Ross for the original 9 holes — and later refined over the decades, the course sits on the valley floor of Banff National Park, framed by the Bow River, the Fairmont Banff Springs hotel, and the jagged limestone peaks of Mount Rundle and Sulphur Mountain, the two formations that give these nines their names. Thompson's routing is considered among his finest work, and Banff Springs regularly appears on lists of the best courses in the world.
Playing here means contending with tight mountain corridors, unpredictable elevation changes, and the kind of scenery that genuinely interrupts your focus. The Devil's Cauldron, a par 3 played over a glacial lake, is one of the most photographed holes in golf.
Wildlife on the course — elk, deer, the occasional bear — is commonplace rather than remarkable. Banff's short summer season and high-altitude light give every round a fleeting, almost theatrical quality that numbers on a scorecard simply cannot capture.
