River Falls sits in the St. Croix River valley in western Wisconsin, where the land rolls and breaks in the kind of glacially carved topography that makes for interesting golf without architects having to force it. The hollows, ridgelines, and wooded corridors that define this corner of the state have a way of turning an ordinary round into something more spatially engaging — elevation changes arrive when you don't expect them, and the views tend to open up at the best moments.
Clifton Hollow reads as a course shaped by its terrain rather than imposed upon it, the name itself suggesting the landform that likely anchored the routing. A par 71 points to some variety in the short game — expect at least a couple of par 4s that play more like decision holes than pure power tests, where placement off the tee matters more than distance.
Western Wisconsin draws Twin Cities golfers looking to escape the metro, and River Falls has enough of a local golf culture to support courses that reward repeat play. This feels like one worth coming back to.
