One of Birmingham's oldest public layouts, Highland Park Golf Course has been a fixture of the city's recreational life for well over a century. Operated by the city, it sits within Highland Park, one of Birmingham's most storied historic neighborhoods — a streetcar-era community of craftsman bungalows and mature tree canopy that surrounds the course with a sense of lived-in character you simply don't find at newer facilities. That setting alone makes it worth seeking out.
Birmingham occupies the southern end of the Appalachian chain, and the terrain here is anything but flat. The Red Mountain ridge defines the city's skyline, and courses throughout the area tend to work with rolling, sometimes demanding topography. At a par 70, Highland Park plays shorter than a traditional championship layout, but the hills and tight older-growth trees keep the routing honest and reward players who can shape the ball and manage their positions rather than simply overpower the course.
