Few courses in England carry the distinction that Berkhamsted does: it is one of the country's finest heathland layouts and, remarkably, plays without a single bunker. That's not an oversight — it's a philosophy. The natural contours of the Chiltern Hills do the work instead, with heather, bracken, gorse, and tumbling fairways providing all the examination a golfer needs. Stray from the short stuff here and you're in genuine trouble without a grain of sand in sight.
The club dates to 1890, making it one of Hertfordshire's oldest, and the course occupies common land on the plateau above the town — a genuinely wild, open setting that gives it a character closer to a links in spirit than the manicured parkland that dominates much of the Home Counties. The routing takes full advantage of the ridge-and-valley topography, with exposed holes that leave players at the mercy of the prevailing wind.
Berkhamsted sits just 30 miles northwest of London along the A41 corridor, easily accessible from the city but a world apart in feel. For golfers who appreciate strategic design over manufactured difficulty, this is a course that rewards thought and imagination over raw power — a rare thing anywhere, let alone this close to the capital.
