Biwabik sits in the heart of Minnesota's Iron Range, the rugged stretch of northeastern Minnesota where open-pit iron ore mining shaped both the landscape and the culture for well over a century. The Quarry takes its name directly from that industrial heritage — this is a course built on and around reclaimed mining terrain, and the scarred, dramatic earth that once fed American steel mills now frames fairways unlike anything you'd find on a conventionally manicured layout. The result is a design with genuine geological drama: exposed rock faces, uneven topography, and a rawness that courses built on flat agricultural land simply cannot replicate.
The Iron Range has quietly developed into a legitimate golf destination, with Giant's Ridge — the resort complex of which The Quarry is a part — drawing players from the Twin Cities and beyond who make the roughly 3-hour drive north for courses that feel genuinely different. The boreal forest of northern Minnesota surrounds the property, meaning dense birch and pine, cool summers, and vivid fall color when the season winds down.
For golfers who find manicured resort courses a little anonymous, The Quarry offers something with more personality — a par 72 that earns its character from the land itself rather than from artificial shaping.
