Few private clubs on the East Coast have generated as much excitement since opening as Friar's Head. Designed by Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw and opened in 2002, the course was carved from the bluffs and woodlands of Long Island's North Fork, a stretch of land that bears a striking resemblance to the great links terrain of the British Isles. The routing moves through towering fescue-covered dunes, open valleys, and natural hollows that Coore and Crenshaw disturbed as little as possible — their characteristically restrained hand letting the land dictate nearly every hole.
The North Fork sits east of the Hamptons crowd, a quieter, more agricultural end of Long Island known for its vineyards, farmstands, and direct bay access. The setting gives Friar's Head a windswept, exposed quality rare on this side of the Atlantic, and conditions shift dramatically with the seasons.
Golf publications have consistently ranked Friar's Head among the top courses in the United States — a remarkable achievement for a club fewer than 25 years old. The membership remains small and private, which preserves the unhurried pace and pristine conditioning that define the experience.
