Bilbao's hills have long offered an escape from the industrial energy of the Basque capital, and Club Artxanda Golf sits within that tradition — a compact, hilly layout in the municipality of Galdakao, just inland from the city in the green, mist-prone valleys of Biscay. The course takes its name from the Artxanda ridge, the high ground overlooking Bilbao that locals have treated as a natural retreat for generations. Playing here means navigating the kind of steep, folded terrain that defines the Basque interior: tight lies, abrupt elevation changes, and views across wooded hillsides that make you forget the urban sprawl below.
This is a members' club catering primarily to the Basque golfing community rather than a destination resort, and it plays accordingly — intimate, unpretentious, and genuinely challenging in the way that short but mountainous courses tend to be. Flat stances are a luxury, and local knowledge matters.
The Basque Country punches well above its weight in golf for a region its size, with a passionate club culture and a climate that keeps the turf lush year-round, if occasionally rain-soaked in the Atlantic fashion.
