Kambalda Golf Course

Kambalda sits in the heart of the Goldfields region of Western Australia, roughly 600 kilometres east of Perth and just south of Kalgoorlie. It's a mining town through and through — nickel was discovered here in 1966, triggering one of Australia's significant resource booms, and the community that grew around that industry has sustained a modest but genuine local golf culture ever since. The landscape is classic outback: red earth, mulga scrub, sparse eucalyptus, and a sky that feels larger than anywhere on the coast.

Golf in the Goldfields is played on sand scrapes rather than grass greens in most cases, and Kambalda's course fits that honest, no-frills tradition. Players carry a small piece of artificial turf to hit approach shots from, and the "browns" — compacted, oiled sand — demand a different kind of short-game feel than anything you'd encounter on a manicured parkland layout. It's practical golf shaped by an environment that doesn't easily support irrigation.

The Goldfields golfing circuit, which includes nearby Kalgoorlie and Coolgardie, draws travellers making their way along the Great Eastern Highway, and Kambalda offers a quieter, more local counterpoint to its more famous neighbours up the road.
