Few Connecticut courses announce themselves quite like Fox Hopyard, a public layout carved through the glacially sculpted hills and dense hardwood forest of East Haddam. The course takes its name from the region's colonial hopyard heritage — hops were once grown in these river valleys for local brewing — and that sense of history seeps into the terrain itself. Designed by Roger Rulewich and opened in 2001, Fox Hopyard earned quick attention for the way it works the natural contours of the land rather than flattening them, producing dramatic elevation changes, rock outcroppings, and forced carries that reward careful course management over raw power.
East Haddam sits in the Connecticut River Valley, a stretch of central Connecticut where the landscape opens into something genuinely scenic — wooded ridgelines, wetland corridors, and that particular New England quality of light in autumn, when the course plays through a canopy of blazing color.
The layout plays to a par of 71, slightly abbreviated but never a pushover, and has built a loyal regional following among golfers who want character and challenge without a private-club price of admission.
