Mountain Lake sits on the Lake Wales Ridge, the ancient spine of sand scrub and highland that runs down the center of Florida — elevated terrain so unlike the flat, marshy image most people carry of the state. The Ridge's rolling hills, clear lakes, and longleaf pine communities give this corner of Polk County a quiet, almost inland-Carolina feel, distinct from the resort corridors to the north and east.
The club is a private community built around one of Florida's more unusual landscapes, and the golf reflects that highland character. A par 70 suggests a course that either trades length for precision or leans into the natural contours of the land in ways that make par feel genuinely earned. The scrub habitat and elevation changes typical of the Ridge would make this a very different proposition from the pancake-flat courses that define much of Florida golf.
Lake Wales itself is a small, historic Central Florida town — home to Bok Tower Gardens, one of the great designed landscapes in the American South — which hints at a certain old-guard sensibility that likely extends to the club itself.
