Few regions in Japan carry the layered history of the Nagasaki coast, and the area around Sasebo and Hirado distills that quality into a landscape unlike anywhere else in the country. This corner of Kyushu faces the East China Sea across a maze of islands and inlets, where the light changes quickly and the terrain folds into steep, forested ridges that define how a golf course must move through the land. Sasebo itself has long been a naval city — first Imperial Japanese, then American — giving it a cosmopolitan edge unusual for a provincial port.

Sasebo-Hirado Country Club occupies this hilly terrain in northern Nagasaki Prefecture, and the course reflects the topography honestly: tight valleys, elevation changes, and tree-lined corridors that reward placement off the tee far more than raw distance. The round asks for patience and local knowledge rather than power.

Hirado, just to the west, is famous as the first port open to European trade in the 16th century — a detail that lends the whole area a sense of historical weight that follows you even onto the course.
