Few public courses in Sacramento County have built as loyal a following as Wildhawk. Opened in 1996 and designed by Robert Murase, the course occupies the southeastern edge of the city near Elk Grove, routed through a landscape of oak woodlands and seasonal wetlands that give it a distinctly Californian character. Murase, better known as a landscape architect than a traditional golf course designer, brought an unusually naturalistic sensibility to the layout — the course feels less manufactured than many of its public-access peers, with native grasses, mature oaks, and water features that read as part of the land rather than imposed on it.
Wildhawk plays as a legitimate test for mid-handicappers while remaining approachable enough for recreational golfers looking for a quality afternoon round. The routing moves through varied terrain, and the oak corridors create genuine strategic framing on several holes, demanding accuracy off the tee rather than raw power.
For Sacramento-area golfers, it sits comfortably among the better daily-fee options in a region that takes its public golf seriously. The central valley climate means near-year-round playability, though summer temperatures regularly push well past 100°F — early morning tee times are practically mandatory from July through September.
