Few golf settings in Puerto Rico carry the weight of history that this one does. Roosevelt Roads was for decades the largest U.S. Naval Station in the world, a sprawling installation on the northeastern coast that served as a strategic hub through the Cold War era before closing in 2004. The golf course was part of that military community's daily life — a facility built to serve sailors, officers, and their families stationed in the Caribbean, and one that now exists in the complicated aftermath of the base's closure and the long-running debate over what becomes of those thousands of acres.
Ceiba sits on Puerto Rico's eastern shore, where the island opens toward the waters between the main island and Vieques. The landscape here is lush and tropical, with views toward the Caribbean that remind you exactly how far from a mainland municipal course you actually are.
What the course is today — its current condition, management, and accessibility — has been subject to the slow, uncertain redevelopment process that has defined the former base's future since the Navy departed. Worth investigating current status before making the trip.
