Commerce City sits just northeast of Denver, hard against the Rocky Mountain front range where the Great Plains begin their long roll eastward. It's an industrial corridor by reputation, home to oil refineries and the Colorado Rapids' soccer stadium — not the first place you'd expect a serious round of golf. Buffalo Run makes a strong case for reconsidering that assumption.
The course occupies a stretch of open, windswept high-plains terrain that plays nothing like the mountain resort tracks an hour up I-70. At roughly 5,200 feet of elevation, the thin air adds distance to every shot, but it's the persistent Front Range wind that defines the experience here. Links-style exposure, wide landing areas, and firm turf conditions are the likely result of that geography — this is golf shaped by environment as much as architecture.
Buffalo Run serves a dense, underserved stretch of the north Denver metro, functioning as a daily-fee public course for a blue-collar community that doesn't always get access to well-maintained, interesting golf. That mission gives the place a straightforward, unpretentious character worth seeking out.
