The Golfplatz Bergen-Hohne sits on the Lüneburg Heath, one of northern Germany's most distinctive landscapes — a broad, open expanse of heathland, pine forest, and sandy soil that, perhaps not coincidentally, makes for natural golf terrain. The region around Bergen and the Hohne military training area carries a complex history, situated near the former Bergen-Belsen concentration camp memorial site. The course itself is connected to the British military garrison at Hohne, part of the long NATO presence on the heath, and has historically served the armed forces community stationed there.
That military-community character shapes the experience: this is a functional, unpretentious layout designed to give service personnel and their families access to the game rather than to impress tournament visitors. The heathland setting does much of the atmospheric work on its own — gorse, heather, and birch are likely features of the surroundings, lending the course a feel more akin to inland links than a manicured parkland.
For visiting golfers, Bergen-Hohne offers a genuine taste of golf on the heath, in a part of Lower Saxony that sees few leisure travelers but rewards those who find it.
