Few golf clubs in New England carry as much weight as Sankaty Head. Founded in 1923 on the eastern bluff of Nantucket Island, the club occupies one of the most dramatic pieces of ground in American golf — open heathland rolling toward the Atlantic, framed by the iconic red-and-white striped Sankaty Head lighthouse. The original design was laid out by Scotsman Donald Ross, who understood immediately that the site needed little embellishment. Wind does the heavy lifting here, turning a straightforward routing into something altogether more demanding depending on which direction it blows off the ocean.
The course plays firm and fast in the traditional links fashion, rewarding low, creative shot-making over brute power. Ross's bunkering remains characteristically penal and precise, and the routing makes exceptional use of the island's natural contours and native rough.
Nantucket itself shapes the experience as much as the architecture. The island's compressed summer season and quiet, cobblestoned village character make Sankaty Head something golfers tend to return to year after year — not just to play, but to belong to.
