Few clubs in England carry a name with more weight than Royal Wimbledon. One of the oldest golf clubs in the country, its origins trace back to 1865, when the game was still a curiosity to most Londoners. The "Royal" prefix came by patronage, and the club's long history on Wimbledon Common — before it settled at its current Camp Road home in Wimbledon — places it among the foundational institutions of English golf. Harry Colt, the great Edwardian architect, had a hand in shaping the course, and his influence is felt in the strategic bunkering and routing that rewards thoughtful play over brute force.
The course sits on Surrey heathland, a landscape that defines some of Britain's finest golf — heather, silver birch, and sandy subsoil that drains quickly and keeps the turf firm and fast through much of the year. This is classic inland links-adjacent terrain, more forgiving in summer, demanding in the cold months when the wind off the Common has teeth.
