Robert Trent Jones Jr. designed Elkhorn Golf Club in the late 1970s, giving Sun Valley a course that matches the grandeur of its surroundings. Set against the Pioneer Mountains in the high desert of central Idaho, the layout uses the natural contours of the valley floor and the sagebrush-covered terrain to create a round that feels genuinely earned — wide open in places, strategically demanding in others. Jones Jr.'s routing makes strong use of elevation changes and the ever-present mountain backdrop, lending the course a sense of scale that photographs struggle to capture.
Sun Valley itself has long drawn a wealthy, outdoors-oriented crowd, and Elkhorn serves as the golf anchor for a resort community more famous for its ski slopes than its fairways. Playing here in summer means crisp mornings, thin mountain air that adds real distance to your shots, and afternoons where the light on the Sawtooth foothills turns everything a particular shade of gold.
Elkhorn is a genuine resort-caliber layout without being artificially manicured into submission — it rewards strategic thinking and punishes loose swings in the way that the best mountain courses tend to do.
