Chester sits at roughly 4,500 feet in Plumas County, on the western shore of Lake Almanor — a massive volcanic-region reservoir in the northern Sierra Nevada that draws summer visitors for fishing, boating, and, yes, golf. The surrounding landscape is defined by Ponderosa pine and fir forests, clean mountain air, and the kind of unhurried pace that makes a round feel like an event rather than a transaction. This is not a corner of California that shows up on national golf radar, which is part of its appeal.
Lake Almanor West sits within the Lake Almanor West community, a residential development that wraps around the lake's western shoreline. Courses like this one — member-oriented, community-rooted, woven into a vacation and second-home enclave — tend to reward a relaxed, repeat-visitor mindset more than trophy-hunting. The pine-lined corridors and mountain setting do the heavy lifting aesthetically.
At this elevation and latitude, the season runs roughly late spring through early fall, which gives the course a short but concentrated window. For anyone spending time at the lake, it's a natural complement to everything else Almanor's summer has to offer.
