High in the Aosta Valley, Gressoney Saint Jean sits at the foot of Monte Rosa, the second-highest massif in the Alps. This is mountain golf at genuine altitude — the kind where the air is noticeably thinner, drives fly farther than expected, and the backdrop competes seriously with the game itself. The valley has long attracted climbers and hikers drawn to the Lys torrent and the meadows above the treeline, and the golf course belongs to that same tradition of alpine leisure that took root in these peaks during the Belle Époque.
A 9-hole layout at this elevation plays very differently from its counterpart in the lowlands. Uneven lies, firm turf shaped by the mountain climate, and the visual drama of steep slopes can disorient even experienced players trying to judge distance and trajectory. Par 35 over 9 holes hints at a course with some bite to it — likely a mix of par 4s and at least one longer hole worth respecting.
The Aosta Valley's short summer season means the course operates within a compressed window, which gives a round here a fleeting, almost privileged quality. This is golf as an extension of the mountains rather than an imposition on them.
