Few municipal courses in Colorado carry the kind of visual drama that greets you at Mariana Butte. Designed by Dick Phelps and opened in 1992, the course winds through the foothills southwest of Loveland, where the terrain does much of the architectural heavy lifting — elevation changes, rocky outcroppings, and ponderosa-dotted ridgelines shape nearly every hole. The Big Thompson River comes into play on several holes, and the views toward the Front Range are a genuine distraction, particularly on the back nine where the course climbs toward the butte that gives it its name.
Loveland sits at the gateway to the Cache la Poudre canyon and the broader Northern Colorado landscape, a region where outdoor recreation shapes daily life. Mariana Butte fits that culture well — it draws both serious local players and visitors passing through on their way to Rocky Mountain National Park, and it consistently earns its reputation as one of the stronger public-access layouts on the Front Range.
For a city-owned course, it plays with genuine ambition. The routing demands shot-shaping and course management rather than just ball-striking, and the natural terrain keeps even familiar handicaps honest. It's the kind of municipal that reminds you public golf, done right, can be as memorable as anything private.
