Few private members' clubs in the Home Counties carry quite the reputation that Lambourne does. Designed by John Jacobs and opened in 1981, the course occupies a stretch of Chiltern countryside near Beaconsfield, where chalk downland meets mature woodland to produce a layout of genuine variety and challenge. Jacobs, better known as a teacher and administrator than an architect, delivered something quietly distinguished here — a course that rewards strategic thinking over raw power and has earned consistent respect among Buckinghamshire's competitive golfers.
The setting does a lot of the work. The Chilterns offer naturally rolling terrain, with elevation changes that frame several holes beautifully and keep the round visually interesting throughout. Beech and oak line many of the fairways, tightening corridors and penalizing the wayward shot in the way that English parkland does best.
Lambourne sits comfortably among the stronger private clubs in a county that also counts Stoke Park and Burnham Beeches among its offerings — understated from the outside, but well regarded by those who know the regional game.
