Few golf experiences along the Florida Panhandle carry the weight of Kelly Plantation. Designed by Fred Couples and Gene Bates and opened in 1998, the course was built on the grounds of a historic timber and turpentine plantation along the shores of Choctawhatchee Bay. That waterfront setting gives the layout a character that separates it sharply from the Gulf-front resort tracks nearby — mature longleaf pines, natural wetlands, and expansive bay views create an atmosphere that feels genuinely wild rather than manicured and manufactured.
The design reflects Couples' preference for playable, visually dramatic golf. Wide fairways invite aggressive play off the tee, but the back nine in particular tightens the stakes with water and marshland pressing in from multiple angles. Several holes along the bay offer the kind of panoramic scenery that makes even a bogey feel tolerable.
Destin itself is one of the Panhandle's busiest resort destinations, famous for its emerald Gulf waters, but Kelly Plantation sits apart from the beach-vacation energy — a serious, scenic course that rewards players who come ready to think their way around.
