Gaylord has quietly built one of the most impressive concentrations of golf in the entire Midwest, and the municipal course bearing the city's name sits at the heart of a community that takes the game seriously. Northern Michigan's landscape does much of the heavy lifting here — the rolling terrain shaped by glacial activity thousands of years ago gives courses in this region a natural sense of movement that designers elsewhere have to work hard to manufacture.
