Greensburg, Kansas carries a weight most small towns don't. In May 2007, an EF5 tornado — one of the widest ever recorded — wiped out roughly 95 percent of the town in a single night. What followed was a remarkable story of deliberate rebuilding, with Greensburg remaking itself as a model of sustainable construction and community resilience. That a golf course still operates here says something about the town's stubbornness and its commitment to ordinary pleasures.
Kiowa County sits in the rolling shortgrass prairie of south-central Kansas, where the sky dominates everything and the wind is less a weather condition than a permanent playing partner. On an open Kansas layout, a par 72 can play to wildly different demands depending on the direction and strength of the breeze on any given day — club selection becomes as much intuition as calculation.
Beyond the specific design details of Cannonball Golf Club itself, what the course almost certainly offers is something increasingly rare: genuine small-town golf, where the game still belongs to the community it serves, and a tee time doesn't require a reservation three weeks out.
