Few golf courses in the Alps demand as much respect for their setting as Golf des Verneys. Perched in the Valloire valley in Savoie at roughly 1,400 meters of elevation, the course sits within one of France's most celebrated ski resorts, operating during the summer months when the surrounding peaks shed their snow and the meadows turn a vivid green. The mountain terrain shapes every hole, with natural slopes, glacial contours, and the crisp high-altitude air creating a playing experience that bears little resemblance to lowland parkland golf.
Valloire itself is a traditional Savoyard village, and the course carries that same unhurried, authentic character. Summer visitors who come for hiking, cycling, and the famous Col du Galibier road climb often discover golf here almost by accident — and find themselves genuinely surprised by the quality of the challenge the mountain landscape provides.
At altitude, the ball flies farther but errant shots find unforgiving terrain fast. Club selection is genuinely puzzling for first-timers, and reading the subtle breaks on greens tilted by the hillside keeps even experienced players honest.
