Sequoyah National Golf Club stands as one of the most distinctive mountain courses in the western North Carolina highlands, owned and operated by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians on tribal land in the Qualla Boundary. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr. and opened in 2009, it was built as a deliberate economic development project for the Cherokee community, and that sense of purpose gives the place an uncommon authenticity. The course carves through the Smoky Mountain terrain with dramatic elevation changes and panoramic ridge views that belong entirely to this corner of Appalachia.
Jones Jr. routed the layout to work with the natural contours of the mountainside rather than against them, producing holes that reward creative shotmaking and spatial awareness over raw distance. Shots that miss fairways tend to find trouble quickly, and reading the undulating greens requires patience and local knowledge.
Whittier sits just outside Cherokee, NC, near the entrance to Great Smoky Mountains National Park, making Sequoyah National as much a destination as a round of golf — the scenery earns its own scorecard entry.
