Few public courses in the Pacific Northwest have earned the lasting affection that Tokatee Golf Club has. Designed by Ted Robinson and opened in 1966, it consistently ranks among the finest public courses in Oregon — and has for decades. The name itself comes from a Chinook word meaning "a place of beauty and grace," which turns out to be a promise the course keeps. Set against the backdrop of the Cascade Range along the McKenzie River corridor, the layout works with the surrounding old-growth Douglas fir and the natural contours of the valley floor rather than imposing anything artificial on them.
Blue River sits in the Upper McKenzie Valley about 45 miles east of Eugene, deep enough into the mountains that the setting feels genuinely remote. The course plays through tall timber with the kind of quiet that's hard to find on a busy public track, and the Cascades loom overhead on clear days in a way that makes concentration a genuine challenge.
Tokatee rewards straightness and patience over power. The tree-lined fairways demand placement off the tee, and the mountain air and soft valley turf give the whole round a feel that's more pure than manufactured — exactly what a good public course in this corner of Oregon should be.
