Fort William Golf Course

Few golf courses in the world carry the historical weight that comes with teeing it up inside an active military cantonment. Fort William Golf Course sits within the grounds of the Eastern Command headquarters of the Indian Army — the same fortified complex the British East India Company began constructing in 1781 after the original fort's fall to Siraj ud-Daulah in 1756. Playing here means moving through a landscape that witnessed the shaping of colonial India, with the Maidan's vast open greens stretching just beyond the perimeter.

The course is one of Kolkata's oldest, sharing lineage with the Royal Calcutta Golf Club nearby — the world's first golf club outside Britain, founded in 1829. That broader Maidan golf tradition gives Fort William its particular character: flat, open fairways typical of the city's central parkland, where ground conditions and the humid Bengal climate matter more than dramatic elevation.

Access is restricted to military personnel and their guests, which keeps the course uncrowded and preserves an atmosphere entirely unlike anything in the city's civilian clubs. Playing here is essentially a privilege — quiet, unhurried, and steeped in a sense of place that no amount of course design can manufacture.
