Columbus Air Force Base sits in the northeastern corner of Mississippi, part of the low, rolling prairie country where the Black Belt soil gives way to piney woods and red clay. The base has been a pilot training hub since World War II, and like many military installations across the American South, it has long maintained a golf course as part of its morale, welfare, and recreation mission — a place where airmen, officers, and their families can decompress from the demands of flight training.
Whispering Pines is the kind of facility that defines military golf at its best: accessible, community-centered, and rooted in the rhythms of base life rather than the ambitions of a resort or private club. The piney woods setting that gives the course its name is characteristic of this part of Mississippi — longleaf and loblolly pines that frame fairways and create a genuine sense of seclusion without ever straying far from the base's daily activity.
Columbus itself sits near the Alabama border, with the Tombigbee River nearby and a mild Southern climate that stretches the playing season well into the calendar. For the military community stationed here, this course is less a destination than a home track — familiar, comfortable, and genuinely theirs.
