Hankinson sits in the far southeastern corner of North Dakota, where the Coteau des Prairies plateau gives way to the broad lowlands along the North Dakota–South Dakota border. This is small-town Great Plains golf country — wide open skies, persistent wind, and the kind of honest, unpretentious game that defines the region's municipal and community courses. The Sisseton Course takes its name from the Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate, the Dakota people whose ancestral territory spans this stretch of the Northern Plains, grounding the course in a landscape with deep historical roots.
A full 18-hole, par-72 layout in a community this size is a genuine asset for local golfers and visitors passing through on Highway 13 or Interstate 29. Courses in this corner of North Dakota tend to play longer and harder than their ratings suggest once the prairie wind picks up, which it reliably does.
Beyond the numbers, this is golf stripped of pretension — a place where the game is about the round, the company, and that particular quality of late-afternoon Great Plains light that makes even a flat fairway feel worth walking.
