Few public courses in the Mid-Atlantic carry the ambitions that Virginia Beach National does. Designed by Pete Dye — one of golf's most celebrated and demanding architects — the course was built to championship standards and plays as a genuine test, not a resort formality. Dye's fingerprints are everywhere: the forced carries, the railroad-tie bunkering, the greens complexes that reward precision and punish complacency. The layout has hosted competitive events befitting its name, drawing serious players who want something more than a casual round by the beach.
Virginia Beach itself is an easy place to underestimate as a golf destination. The coastal geography flattens the terrain, but the ocean winds are a genuine force — club selection becomes a creative exercise round to round, and what plays straightforward on a calm morning can become something else entirely when the Atlantic asserts itself.
For visiting golfers, Virginia Beach National represents the serious side of a resort city better known for its boardwalk. It rewards players who come prepared to think.
