Few public courses anywhere in the Atlantic world can match Port Royal's combination of oceanfront drama and genuine accessibility. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Sr. and opened in 1970, it stands as one of his most celebrated government-commissioned layouts — built for the people of Bermuda and still operated as a public facility today. Jones routed the course along the island's southwestern cliffs, and the result is a round that swings between lush fairways lined with Bermuda's signature vegetation and sudden, vertiginous drops to open sea.
The 16th hole is among the most photographed par 3s in the world — a carry over a deep ocean cove to a green perched on the clifftop, fully exposed to the Atlantic trade winds that make club selection here a matter of genuine debate regardless of your handicap. Wind shapes every round at Port Royal; what plays downwind in the morning can be a completely different examination by afternoon.
Southampton sits on Bermuda's southwestern parish, and the course reflects the island's particular character — compact, immaculately conditioned, and ringed by that unmistakable turquoise water. For visiting golfers, Port Royal is typically a centerpiece of any Bermuda itinerary, and rightly so.
