Alto sits at roughly 7,000 feet in the Sacramento Mountains of southern New Mexico, part of the Lincoln County highlands that also shelter Ruidoso — one of the Southwest's more surprising concentrations of outdoor recreation. At that elevation, the air is thin, the pines are ponderosa, and golf balls travel noticeably farther than they would at sea level. Alto Lakes Country Club serves a tight-knit private membership in a small mountain community, the kind of club where the social fabric matters as much as the game itself. A par-71 layout signals a design that likely trades one par 5 for an extra par 3 or 4, which in mountain terrain often means a hole shaped by an elevation change or a natural feature the architect simply worked around rather than flattened.
