Papwa Sewgolum Golf Course

Few South African golf courses carry a name more charged with meaning. Papwa Sewgolum was a self-taught Durban caddie who, barred by apartheid from competing with white players, nonetheless won the 1963 Dutch Open and twice claimed the Natal Open — famously receiving his trophy in the rain outside the clubhouse because he was not permitted to enter it. Naming this municipal course in his honor is Durban's acknowledgment of a man the country once tried to erase from its own sporting story.

The course sits in eThekwini, the dense, humid coastal municipality that sprawls back from the Indian Ocean. Durban's climate — subtropical, with punishing summer heat and the occasional afternoon thunderstorm rolling in off the Bight of Benin — shapes how any round here feels.
