Few golf courses in Los Angeles can claim the kind of unglamorous, democratic utility that Woodley Lakes has provided for decades. Operated by the City of Los Angeles Recreation and Parks Department, this San Fernando Valley municipal has long served as the everyday course for the sprawling communities stretching from Encino to Van Nuys — the kind of place where junior golfers get their start, retirees play three mornings a week, and the weekend tee sheet fills fast.
The course sits within Woodley Park, a broad recreational corridor in the Valley floor adjacent to the Sepulveda Basin — a flood-control greenway that transforms the otherwise dense urban landscape into something surprisingly open. That flat, basin terrain means the layout is largely walkable and forgiving in its topography, making it accessible to players of all abilities.
Encino and the surrounding Valley communities have a long relationship with public golf, and Woodley Lakes remains a cornerstone of it. It isn't the most glamorous round in greater Los Angeles, but it delivers honest, affordable golf in a city where both can be genuinely hard to find.
