West Des Moines sits on the western edge of Iowa's capital metro, a prosperous suburb where corporate campuses and residential neighborhoods have pushed steadily outward across the prairie flatlands. Willow Creek Golf Course takes its name from the creek system that drains much of this part of Polk County, and that riparian corridor — with its cottonwoods, willows, and the occasional exposed bank — almost certainly shapes the routing in ways the scorecard alone won't convey.
At par 68, this is a shorter, more accessible layout than a full championship test, built around multiple par 3s and shorter par 4s. That configuration rewards precision and shot-making over raw power, and tends to make for a brisk, enjoyable round — the kind of course where a mid-handicapper can find real momentum and a low-handicapper has to stay sharp to score.
For Des Moines-area golfers, courses like this serve as the everyday fabric of the local game: accessible, unpretentious, and genuinely useful for squeezing in a round after work or on a weekend morning before the Iowa summer heat takes hold.
