Few California mountain courses carry quite the unhurried, genuine character of Graeagle Meadows. Laid out across the meadow floor of the Feather River country in Plumas County, the course plays through open, gently rolling terrain framed by stands of pine and the kind of wide Sierra sky that makes it hard to keep your eyes on the ball. The elevation sits comfortably above 4,000 feet, which means the ball carries a touch farther and the afternoons stay cool even in midsummer.
Graeagle itself is one of those small Sierra Nevada mill towns that quietly reinvented itself as a destination for outdoor recreation — fishing, hiking, and, centrally, golf. The meadows course is the anchor of that identity, a public layout that draws a loyal regional following from the Sacramento Valley and the Bay Area looking to escape the summer heat.
The design philosophy here is refreshingly uncluttered: water comes into play on several holes via the East Branch of the Feather River, and the routing rewards straight, sensible golf over power. It plays as a genuine pleasure rather than a test of ego.
