The Lodge at Rocky Gap has long anchored this western Maryland resort, and the golf course — designed by Lindsay Ervin and opened in 1999 — matches its surroundings with genuine ambition. Carved through the Appalachian ridges of Allegany County, it occupies land that was once part of Rocky Gap State Park, and that heritage shows: the layout threads through mature hardwood forest, with the Blue Ridge Mountains rising on all sides and Lake Habeeb visible from several holes. It plays as a true mountain course, with elevation changes that shift club selection constantly and wooded corridors that demand accuracy off the tee.
Rocky Gap sits near Cumberland, a small city with a proud industrial history and a position at the gateway to western Maryland's outdoor recreation corridor. The course draws visitors from the Baltimore-Washington metro area looking for a genuine mountain escape, and the casino-resort setting means it functions as a destination rather than a quick local round.
The design rewards players who work the ball and think their way around — brute length is rarely the answer on terrain this uneven. Fall is the standout season, when the surrounding hardwoods turn and the ridgelines beyond the fairways earn their keep.
