Greenock Golf Club sits on the hills above the town of Greenock, on the south bank of the Firth of Clyde in Inverclyde. The elevation gives the course sweeping views across the water toward Argyll and the Highland hills beyond — on a clear day, the panorama is genuinely dramatic, and even on a grey one, the sense of place is hard to match. The terrain here is moorland in character, the kind of exposed, wind-scoured ground that demands honest ball-striking and rewards local knowledge.
A par of 68 tells you this is a shorter, tighter layout rather than a power course, but that number shouldn't be mistaken for easy. Moorland tracks in the west of Scotland have a way of humbling visitors who arrive expecting something straightforward — the wind off the Clyde is rarely polite, and firm ground tends to produce unpredictable bounces that keep you thinking.
Greenock itself is a working-class Clydeside town with deep industrial roots in shipbuilding, and the golf club carries that same unpretentious character. This is members' golf, community golf — the kind of club where the game feels like it belongs to everyone who turns up to play it.
