Few golf facilities in the Midwest have played a larger role in shaping competitive collegiate golf than Alvamar. The Lawrence course served for decades as the home layout for the University of Kansas Jayhawks and hosted numerous Big 12 and NCAA regional championships, giving it a legitimate claim as one of Kansas's most historically significant tournament venues. Its open, tree-lined design reflects the sensibility of the rolling eastern Kansas terrain — not the flat, wind-scoured prairie many outsiders picture when they think of the state.
Lawrence itself rewards a closer look. Seat of the University of Kansas and Douglas County, it sits roughly 40 miles west of Kansas City along the Kansas River, and the area's mix of gentle hills, mature hardwoods, and persistent prairie winds shapes how golf plays here. Rounds at Alvamar tend to remind you that Kansas can bite back.
The course carries the comfortable wear of a layout that has genuinely mattered — not polished for resort guests, but sharpened by serious competition and loyal local play over many decades.
