Shell Cove is a relatively new residential and marina development on the Illawarra Coast, about 90 kilometres south of Sydney, where the escarpment of the Illawarra Range drops sharply toward a coastline of lagoons, headlands, and open Pacific exposure. The Links Shell Cove was purpose-built as part of that broader community development, designed to bring a genuine links-influenced layout to a region better known for parkland and bush courses. The Illawarra's coastal strip has a compact but enthusiastic golf culture, with courses like Wollongong Golf Club and Shellharbour Golf Club serving a loyal local base.
The design leans into the area's coastal character — open fairways, sea breezes off Shellharbour Bay, and a landscaping aesthetic that echoes links tradition rather than the dense bush typical of NSW golf further inland. It plays as a public-access course attached to the Shell Cove residential precinct, making it accessible to visitors staying in the region or passing through on the Sydney–to–south-coast corridor.
For travelling golfers, the setting alone earns a look. The Illawarra coastline is genuinely dramatic, and the course offers a style of play — wind-affected, open, requiring ground game thinking — that is genuinely scarce along the NSW coast.
