Few clubs anywhere can claim a founding date of 1774, but Royal Musselburgh does exactly that, making it one of the oldest golf clubs in the world and the 5th oldest in Scotland. The "Royal" prefix was granted in 1876, a distinction that speaks to the club's standing during golf's formative era, when the game was being codified and its great clubs were staking out their place in history.
The course sits on the links fringe of Prestonpans, a town on the Firth of Forth coastline east of Edinburgh in East Lothian — a county so saturated with serious golf that it calls itself the "Home of Golf." Royal Musselburgh occupies parkland grounds at Prestongrange House rather than pure linksland, giving it a character slightly distinct from its more famous East Lothian neighbours, with mature trees and an estate setting lending the layout a quieter, more sheltered feel than the open coastal exposures of Gullane or North Berwick.
At par 70, the course rewards precision over length, and the history pressing in from every angle — ancient club records, a storied membership, centuries of strokeplay — gives even an ordinary round here an unmistakable weight.
