Laucala Island is one of the most remote and extraordinary private golf experiences on earth — a course carved through the interior of a small Fijian island in the Cavu group of the northern Lau archipelago. The island itself was famously purchased by Red Bull co-founder Dietrich Mateschitz in 2003, who transformed it into an ultra-exclusive resort where guests arrive by private jet and the golf course is simply one thread in an almost absurdly lavish tapestry of land, sea, and tropical wilderness.
The layout winds through coconut plantations, volcanic ridgelines, and jungle, with the Pacific Ocean providing a constant visual and psychological presence. Several holes play along cliff edges or with ocean backdrops that would feel theatrical if they weren't completely genuine. It is the kind of course where the surroundings overwhelm the scorecard in the best possible way.
Access is strictly limited to resort guests, meaning the course rarely sees more than a handful of players on any given day — an unusual quietness that gives the experience an almost surreal intimacy for those fortunate enough to play it.
