Sequim occupies one of the most climatically unusual pockets in the Pacific Northwest — sitting in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains, it receives roughly 16 inches of annual rainfall, making it dramatically drier than the surrounding region. That quirk gives The Cedars at Dungeness a playing season and turf condition that most western Washington courses can't match, and it's a genuine draw for golfers who've grown tired of slogging through the wet lowlands around Seattle or Tacoma.
The course takes its name from 2 of the area's defining natural features: the western red cedars that frame much of the property, and the Dungeness Spit — the longest natural sand spit in the United States — stretching into the Strait of Juan de Fuca just north of town. The setting places you in view of the Olympic Peninsula's foothills, with the mountains themselves forming the backdrop to the south.
Beyond the scenery, Sequim is a small, unhurried community that has become a quiet retirement and recreation destination, and the course reflects that personality — approachable and rooted in its surroundings rather than pretentious about them.
