Few American clubs carry a résumé as storied as Scioto's. Donald Ross designed the original layout in 1916, and it quickly established itself as one of the Midwest's premier tests of golf. The club hosted the 1926 U.S. Open — won by Bobby Jones in what he later called one of his most satisfying victories — and has since welcomed the PGA Championship, the U.S. Amateur, the Ryder Cup, and the Memorial Tournament in its early years. Jack Nicklaus learned the game here as a boy under the tutelage of club pro Jack Grout, and that origin story alone cements Scioto's place in golf's broader history.
The course sits in Upper Arlington on Columbus's west side, occupying gently rolling terrain characteristic of central Ohio. Ross's routing rewards precision and course management over raw power, with subtly contoured greens that remain the layout's most enduring challenge.
As a private members' club, Scioto offers no public access, but its reputation extends well beyond Ohio. For serious students of American golf history, it belongs in the same conversation as Oakmont, Merion, and the other great Ross-era clubs that shaped how the game is played on this side of the Atlantic.
