Golf de la Nivelle

Few courses in France announce their setting as dramatically as Golf de la Nivelle. Laid out on a hillside above the Basque port town of Ciboure and its twin city Saint-Jean-de-Luz, the course looks out over the Bay of Biscay and the Pyrenean foothills simultaneously — a panorama that makes it genuinely difficult to keep your eyes on the ball. The layout dates to 1907, making it one of the oldest courses in the Basque Country, and its compact, rolling terrain rewards shot-shaping and strategic thinking over raw power.

The course takes its name from the Nivelle river, which defines the border between France and Spain just below the property. That geography matters: this is Basque golf, not generic French golf, and the culture, cuisine, and language of the region give a round here a character you won't find in Normandy or the Loire.

The Basque Coast has a genuine golf heritage — Biarritz and Chantaco are close neighbors — and La Nivelle fits comfortably into that tradition as an unhurried, scenic members' club that visitors can access without fuss.
